Apocalypse Rangers is a 3D open world twin stick shooter RPG.
The player takes the role of a Ranger, a hero whose purpose is to kill alien creatures in a post-apocalyptic setting.
Rangers fight these enemies across the Wildlands, various areas each
one hiding different secrets and challenges.
In order to unlock new equipment, players will have to complete the quests given by the numerous NPCs who can be found around the Wildlands and in the Settlement, the main hub where rangers can prepare themselves for the hunts. The player, with friends or by themselves, can freely explore the Wildlands or follow the main quest line, which has the purpose to introduce areas, alien creatures and crazy NPCs.
While playing is possible in single player, the game encourages social dynamics thanks to a clan system and features boss mechanics built around cooperative multiplayer.

More info about
Apocalypse Rangers
Apocalypse Rangers was designed and developed for an University course in the span of 6 months with 2 other students.
Designing and developing this kind of game in small team of two designers and a developer is an exciting but challenging endeavor. Here are some issues we encountered:
Scope Management:
Creating an expansive open world with numerous areas and features might lead to scope creep so we prioritized key features, focus on delivering a polished and immersive experience in the core game.
Communication and Collaboration:
Limited team size may lead to communication gaps and misunderstandings, so we established a clear communication structure, with regular meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and ideas. Utilize project management tools for efficient collaboration. Foster a culture of open communication and feedback within the team.
Lack of artists:
To overcome the lack of artists and streamline the development process, we adopted a resourceful approach that involved utilizing preset assets and implementing user-friendly tools. We leveraged existing asset libraries and online marketplaces to acquire high-quality 3D models, textures, and animations. This not only saved time but also ensured a consistent level of visual quality throughout the game. Embracing a stylized art direction helped mitigate the need for hyper-realistic and complex assets. A coherent and visually appealing art style, carefully chosen during the early stages of development, allowed us to achieve an attractive and immersive environment with a limited set of assets.
Quest Design:
Designing engaging quests that are diverse and keep players interested can be challenging, so we focused on create a mix of story-driven quests, side quests, and dynamic events. Incorporate choices and consequences to add depth to the narrative.
Balancing Single Player and Multiplayer
Balancing the game for both single-player and cooperative multiplayer experiences can be tricky. So we designed encounters and quests that scale in difficulty based on the number of players. Implement a dynamic difficulty adjustment system to ensure a challenging experience for both solo and multiplayer modes. Gather player feedback to fine-tune balancing.
Clan System:
Implementing a robust clan system with meaningful benefits and interactions may require extensive development, so we started with essential clan features and gradually expand from there. Offer incentives for players to form and participate in clans, such as unique gear, buffs, or exclusive events.
Boss Mechanics:
Creating cooperative multiplayer boss mechanics that are engaging and challenging without being frustrating can be complex.
Solution: Design bosses with mechanics that encourage teamwork and coordination. Include elements that require players to communicate and strategize.
